Our Story

Kinen: Born from Tradition, Crafted with Heart

Welcome to Kinen! a yoga mat brand that transcends mere products. Our story is one of connection, collaboration, and purpose, brought to life by three dedicated practitioners united by their passion for yoga.

Our journey began in 2013 when the renowned Ashtanga teacher Kino MacGregor crossed paths with Joseph Armstrong. Their relationship, rooted in mutual respect for the ancient practice, flourished as Joseph studied under Kino and later taught at the Miami Life Center, a celebrated hub for yoga and holistic wellness. This was just the beginning.

In 2018, Edgar Navarro joined the team, having moved to Guatemala to teach and explore. Beneath the stunning volcanos of Central America, Joseph and Edgar’s bond deepened, culminating in a sold-out weekend of classes with Kino in Antigua. Edgar’s multifaceted background, as a breathwork teacher and an accomplished industrial designer—adds a crucial layer to Kinen. His expertise in product design ensures that every Kinen mat is not only visually stunning but also engineered for durability, comfort, and sustainability.

Joseph brings years of experience studying under R. Sharath Jois in Mysore and a two-year apprenticeship at the Miami Life Center. His understanding of practitioners’ needs is woven into the fabric of Kinen mats. Joseph creates an atmosphere that balances discipline with joy, ensuring that every practice is safe, supportive, and transformative.

Kino’s global influence further enriches Kinen. As the youngest woman to receive Ashtanga Yoga certification from K. Pattabhi Jois, she possesses an extraordinary depth of knowledge. Her journey includes completing the demanding Advanced A and B Series of Ashtanga, solidifying her reputation as a master of the craft. Kino has authored the acclaimed The Power of Ashtanga Yoga series and built a thriving online presence, sharing the physical and philosophical dimensions of yoga with millions.

Beyond her teachings and writings, Kino co-founded the Miami Life Center and founded Omstars, the first yoga TV network, revolutionizing how yoga is practiced and shared. Her commitment to making yoga accessible worldwide inspired the creation of Kinen, a reflection of their shared dedication to the art and lifestyle of yoga.

From this collective vision, Kinen was born. Kinen yoga mats are designed to meet the needs of all practitioners, offering superior grip, comfort, and sustainability. We believe that yoga is a lifestyle, embodying values of kindness, mindfulness, community, and environmental care.

At Kinen, we invite you to be a spark of light and movement in your practice. Just as "kinen" means "to be seen" in Balinese, we want you to be seen, be known, and be memorable. Our mats are crafted to leave a lasting impression, celebrating your journey and encouraging you to make your mark.

Drawing from the Gaelic word "ken," which means "to know," we create a space where you can be part of our family, our kin: a community that values connection and understanding. With Kino’s esteemed reputation, Joseph’s profound teaching experience, and Edgar’s design prowess, Kinen resonates with practitioners at all levels.

Embrace the miraculous journey of yoga with us. Our mats are not just tools; they are a celebration of your practice. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just beginning your journey, Kinen is here to support you every step of the way.

Be Kinen. Practice with your heart, and let us be your foundation.
