Kinen Mat Care

How to Take Care of Your Kinen Yoga Mat: A Step-by-Step Guide

At Kinen, we believe your yoga mat is more than just a surface it's your sanctuary. Our Eco Polyurethane and Natural Rubber mats are crafted with high-quality, earth-conscious materials designed to support your practice and last over time. With a little regular care, your Kinen mat will stay fresh, grippy, and beautiful for years to come.

Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to keeping your mat in its best shape:

Daily Care: After Each Practice

1. Wipe it down gently.
After each session, use a soft cloth dampened with water to wipe away sweat and dirt. You can add a tiny drop of gentle soap (like castile or diluted dish soap), but avoid anything too harsh or oily.

2. Avoid heavy sprays.
Essential oil sprays or alcohol-based cleaners can damage the mat's top polyurethane layer and natural rubber base. Stick to a water-based solution when cleaning.

3. Let it air out.
Hang your mat or lay it flat to air dry fully before rolling it up. This helps prevent odor and keeps bacteria away.

🧼 Deep Cleaning: Weekly or Bi-Weekly

1. Mix a gentle cleaning solution.
Use one part white vinegar to three parts water or a drop of natural soap in warm water.

2. Wipe, don’t soak.
Dip a clean cloth into the solution and wipe both sides of your mat. Don’t submerge the mat or leave it wet for too long, this can break down the rubber base.

3. Rinse with clean water.
Use another cloth with just water to wipe off any residue.

4. Dry it completely.
Lay your mat flat or hang it in a shaded, well-ventilated area (never under direct sunlight!). Sun can dry out the natural rubber and fade the top surface.

☀️ Do’s and Don’ts for Longevity

✅ Do:

  • Roll your mat with the top surface (the grippy side) facing out. This keeps the edges from curling.

  • Store it in a cool, dry place.

  • Use a yoga mat bag or cover to protect it during transport.

❌ Don’t:

  • Use alcohol, bleach, or essential oils on the surface.

  • Leave it in a hot car or direct sunlight for long periods.

  • Scrub it with rough brushes or abrasive sponges.

🌿 A Few Final Thoughts

Like any good ritual, mat care becomes second nature with time. By giving your Kinen Yoga mat a little love, you’re honoring the materials, the artisanship behind it, and your own practice. Each breath, each pose, each moment—it’s all built on the foundation you create.

Happy practicing,
The Kinen Team
